It’s hard to believe there was a time when televisions didn’t have a remote control. Today, almost no electronic device has a remote control, and the Roku family of devices is no exception.

The Roku is of little use if you’re constantly getting up to change the channel or manually go to a menu. Sure, you can control the Roku with your smartphone, but it’s not as convenient as a standard one-button remote. If your Roku remote stops working, this can be a real problem.

In this article, we’ll go over some troubleshooting steps to get your Roku remote working again.

What are the causes of Roku remotes not working?

  • Low battery
  • No recognition

Reset your Roku remote control

  1. Remove the batteries from the Roku remote control.
  2. Unplug the power from the Roku console/key (or go to Settings -> System -> System Restart -> Reboot if you have a Roku IR remote that still works).
  3. Wait 10 seconds, then reconnect the Roku set-top box to a power source.
  4. Wait for the screensaver to load.
  5. Insert the batteries back into the Roku remote control.

Reconnect the Roku remote control

  1. Unplug the Roku remote control from the power source.
  2. Wait 10 seconds, reconnect the device and wait for the home screen to load.
  3. Locate the pairing button on the remote control. This is usually located on the front of the device or in the battery compartment.
  4. Press and hold the button for five seconds or until you see the Roku remote blink.

Check the Wi-Fi network connection

The Roku doesn’t need an Internet connection to connect to your set-top box, but it does need a working local network. If your local network is interrupted for any reason, the remote will not work until the connection is re-established.

If you have enough technical knowledge, it may be worth checking your router settings; something may have happened that is blocking the connection to the remote.

Check the batteries in your Roku remote

A slow drop in performance is a sure sign that the power supply may be the problem. Some Roku remotes require two AA batteries, while others require two AAA batteries.

Check this by looking at the label on the remote. The batteries are available behind the slide-out plate on the back of the unit.
