If you found Google Docs, Sheets or Slides on your Android device a little too bright, you may prefer a new colour scheme. Google is introducing dark theme support for all three of these tools.
The dark theme will allow you to intelligently customize the product interface and user-generated content to make it more usable in low-light environments and save battery power.
Document, sheet and slide settings will be automatically adjusted when the Android system is configured to use the dark theme. You can also enable or disable the dark mode for documents, sheets and slides independently. In this case, each application is always in the selected theme regardless of the Android system settings.
All Android users will have access to the dark theme within the next two weeks. Users can activate the dark theme on documents, sheets or slides by going to the settings of the corresponding application.
How to Use Dark Mode on Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
Like many other applications, Google Docs, Slides and Sheets automatically use the settings of your Android theme. This means that if you have Black Theme enabled on Android (10 or more), Black Mode will automatically be enabled for documents, slides and sheets.
However, if you a. are using an earlier version of Android, b. haven’t enabled Dark Theme on Android 10 or later, or c. want to change your individual display settings for Google Docs, slides, or sheets, you can do so. Here you can learn how to
- Just open the Google Docs, Slides or Sheets application on your Android device.
- Tap the menu in the top left corner (three horizontal lines).
- Tap Settings > Select a theme, then choose from Dark, Light, or System Default.
If you’re using the dark theme, you can also preview a document in the light theme to see how it will look to others. To do this, open the application and then open the document or record you want to preview. Click More in the upper right corner, and then click View in Light mode.
Previewing a Document or Sheet in Light Mode
The dark theme automatically adapts your documents and sheets to the theme and improves the display. You can preview the appearance of a document or sheet for employees in the light theme.
- Open the Google Docs or Sheets application on your Android phone or tablet.
- Open the document or record you want to view.
- Tap More in the upper right corner.
- Tap Show in light topic.
