In fact, this error message often appears when you format a RAW partition, create a new partition or convert a basic disk with disk management to a dynamic disk. If such a problem occurs, you may feel very annoyed.

Consider a scenario in which you want to extend the disk partition on your Windows 10 system. To do this, increase the existing volume and reduce the original volume. However, while performing these tasks, you suddenly encountered an error message from Virtual Disk Manager.

Here is the complete error message:

The selected GPT formatted disk contains a partition which is not of type ‘PARTITION_BASIC_DATA_GUID’, and is both preceeded and followed by a partition of type ‘PARTITION_BASIC_DATA_GUID’.

What is a GPT disk?

The GUID partitioning table (GPT) was introduced as part of the EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) initiative. GPT provides a more flexible hard disk partitioning mechanism than the old Master Boot Record (MBR) partitioning scheme that was common on PCs.

A partition is a contiguous space on a physical or logical disk that functions as if it were a physically separate disk. Partitions are displayed by the system firmware and installed operating systems. Access to a partition is controlled by the system firmware before the operating system starts up, and then by the operating system after it starts up.

Causes “The selected disk is a GPT partition type disk”.

This error message “Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected hard disk is not a GPT partition type” means that the computer is configured to boot in existing BIOS mode, but the hard disk on which you are trying to install Windows is partitioned in GPT partition style. Some old motherboards support the old WOOD instead of the old + UEFI / CSM boot. In the old BIOS, you can only install the operating system on an MBR drive because the old BIOS does not support modern GPT partitioning. If the version of Windows you are installing supports GPT, but not BIOS, the problem occurs during Windows configuration. So the solution to this error is to convert the GPT reader to MBR.
