Restarting does not solve the problem and the error may still occur if you download the updates the next day.

A thread in Microsoft’s response forum indicates that the problem is widespread. It is not clear whether all Windows 7 systems are affected by the problem, or whether only a subset of systems are affected.

  1. Close all open windows.
  2. Click on the Start button, click on All Programs, then on Accessories.
  3. Right-click on “Command prompt” and click on “Run as administrator”.
  4. Under “Administrator: Command prompt”, type “net stop WuAuServ” (without quotes) and press Enter.
  5. Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it indicates that it has stopped before trying to rename the folder.
  6. Click on the Start button, type “%windir%” (without quotes) in the Start search field, and press Enter.
  7. Locate the “SoftwareDistribution” folder in the open folder.
  8. Right-click on the folder, select Rename and type Sdold (without quotes) to rename the folder.
  9. Still in “Administrator: Command prompt”, type the command “net start WuAuServ” (without quotation marks) in the opened window to restart the Windows Update Service.

Many users on Microsoft response forums have confirmed that they can check for updates for Windows 7 by resetting the date to March 12, 2017. This simple tip restores the functionality of Windows Update and you should be able to download new updates.

Disable additional Microsoft updates.

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Navigate to: System and security -> Updating Windows -> Changing settings -> Select how to install Windows updates.
  3. Disable the option: Give me Microsoft product updates and look for new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows.
  4. Click OK and save the changes.
  5. Check the updates and you can now download the updates without any errors.

CONCLUSION

Microsoft then fixed the problem by changing the expiration date of a file on the update server. Apparently, the problem was caused by a file that was supposed to expire 2.12.17. However, if you still receive the error message, follow the troubleshooting step described above.
