Cortana in Windows 10 is not limited to the search function. It can be used for other useful functions. For example, if you are looking for the meaning of a word, what do you do? Search a reference book or surf the Internet? Wait, you can also use the Cortana service as a dictionary.

Use Cortana as dictionary

You can have Cortana use the built-in Oxford dictionary engine to search for a word. If you enter the word alacrity or What does alacrity or Define alacrity mean, Cortana will know that you want to know the meaning, and her dictionary will tell you. See screenshot below.
