In the latest Windows 10 Home Insider Build, Microsoft introduced an option to connect to Windows with accounts without passwords.

Passwords are certainly one of the Achilles’ heels of account security; a recent study on password leakage in 2018 showed that Internet users still use about the same insecure passwords as five years ago.

Password weakness is not only the user’s fault; companies are reluctant to establish rules that are too restrictive for password definition.

Users who register for a Microsoft account must assign them a password. Although it is theoretically possible to create a local Windows account without a password and even to configure Windows for automatic login, all Windows accounts that are Microsoft accounts also require a password; this can change with Windows 10 version 1903, as Microsoft has introduced a new option in recent internal versions.

Configuring user accounts without passwords under Windows 10

This is only possible for a new user account. To activate a user account with this function, you must open the Windows 10 Settings application.

• Go to Accounts > Family and Other Users > Add another person to this computer.
• Enter the details required by the new mini window that appears. You must enter the phone number because you are creating an account without a password.
• Lock your computer.
• Now select the user account for the phone number you entered.
• Your account will not have a password for the moment, but you will be asked to authenticate with an automatically generated PIN – which you will receive on your phone number.
• Select Connection options > PIN.

• Review the web configuration to define a specific connection method.
• Your user account without password under Windows 10 is now ready.
• If you already have an account but your phone number is not associated with your Microsoft account, you will need to add a phone number to your Microsoft account.
• Install any Office application on your Android or iOS device.
• Open the application and select Login or register for free.

Follow the on-screen instructions to link your phone number to your Microsoft account.

To use an account without a password to log in to Windows 10, do the following.

1. On Windows, add your account via Settings > Accounts > Family and other users > Add other people to this computer.
2. Lock your device and select your phone number account on the Windows login screen.
3. Since your account does not have a password, select “Login Options”, click on the alternative tile “PIN”, then click on “Login”.
4. Review the web login and installation of Windows Hello (this is what you will use to log into your account later).
5. You can now enjoy connecting to Windows with your phone number account without a password.

CONCLUSION

The implementation is not easy at the moment; some will say it is complicated. Configuring Windows on a device currently requires a regular account. Continuous accounts can be password-free if the user has a mobile device and is connected to a Microsoft account.

The user must always remember a PIN code and connect to it if facial authentication or fingerprints are not available on the device.

It remains to be seen whether the process will be optimized in future constructions.
