Outlook is a personal information manager that is mainly used to retrieve emails and is part of the Microsoft Office suite. What distinguishes Outlook from other email managers is that it can store notes, a calendar and even a log. Users can also use it to browse the Web.

Despite its popularity, there are many cases where users are not able to connect to Outlook on the reputable server or actively change email. What is the cause of this error?

SMTP uses a default port of 25, but hackers often abuse this port to send spam via mass mail worms. As a result, some Internet service providers and Internet security applications limit communication on port 25. Check with your ISP or check your Security Suite settings to see if this is the case. In this case, contact your email provider to determine if they offer communication via another port, allow port 25 in your firewall or follow your ISP’s instructions to forward emails via their outgoing email server.

How to Fix Outlook not Connecting to Your Email Server?

Enable SMTP authentication for the POP or IMAP account.

Some email services, including iCloud email accounts, require authentication for their SMTP server. If you check that all your account settings are correct but you still can’t send messages, try enabling SMTP authentication.

  1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
  2. In the left pane of the Accounts dialog box, select the account.
  3. Under Outgoing Server, select Other options.
  4. From the Authentication drop-down menu, select the type of authentication and enter your credentials as required.

PC/laptop firewall problems


Although not as common, firewalls and antivirus software on user PCs can block connections to certain ranges of IP addresses, which may include the IP address of the server. This can lead to errors when connecting to the mail server to send or receive mail.

Restart Outlook

You must restart MS Outlook and, if this is not possible, restart your computer. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen Outlook connectivity problems solved with a simple restart. The problem may be caused by computer connection problems. If you open your web browser and do not access a website or internal resources, this is most likely the problem.

If Outlook still cannot connect and you cannot access websites or internal resources, contact your IT department because you have a network problem. Once this issue is resolved, Outlook will be fine.
