Microsoft Windows 10 S is a version of the Windows 10 operating system for educational use. The Windows 10 S operating system limits the downloading of applications from the Microsoft Store App Store. As a result, it is said to be more secure than the main operating system Windows 10.
In 2018, Microsoft renamed Windows 10 S to Mode S because consumers were confused by the multiple versions of Windows 10. Mode S is now essentially a mode on devices running Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro.
Many computer store lists still list Windows 10 S instead of the more recent S mode. Essentially, they are the same.
In a nutshell
- What is it? Windows 10 without x86 and x64 applications
- When does he get out? Now available for purchase
- How much will it cost? Free for all schools using Windows 10 Pro.
To check if you are using Windows 10 S Mode
You can check if you are using mode S by going to Settings > System > About. On the Info page, scroll down to the “Windows Specifications” section.
If you see the words “in mode S” to the right of Edit, use a PC in mode S. If not, do not use mode S.
You can only run verified applications from the Windows store.
The big problem with Windows 10 S is that it is designed to run only applications verified from the Windows store. You will not be able to download and install applications online; this version is actually a sandbox.
This is a big disadvantage for many users, but Windows 10 in mode S is intended for educational institutions or environments where you do not want users to install their own applications.
This means that it is potentially more secure, but also that Microsoft knows exactly what software it will be dealing with, and that it should mean that performance requirements can be customized without a dishonest application being left in the background eating energy and consuming resources.
What are the advantages of using Windows 10 in mode S?
Although Windows 10 S or S mode has some limitations, the same limitations improve a Windows 10 device in different ways:
Since it is not possible to download programs from websites while using Windows 10 in mode S, you are less likely to accidentally install malware or a computer virus that could infect your device.
Windows 10 in mode S can only run Windows applications downloaded from Microsoft Store, which prevents many background programs from running and slowing down your device. This results in faster start-up times, smoother operation for low-power devices and possibly longer battery life.
How can I get it?
Windows 10 S will only be available on new computers for the foreseeable future, not as a separate version from Windows users who can update or install with Windows 10 Pro.
Overall, there are still questions about the viability of Windows 10 S. Fortunately, you can count on us to cover new developments that (hopefully) address these criticisms here on this page.
