If you still forget to empty the recycle bin on Windows 10, use this guide to automatically empty the recycle bin from your computer according to a schedule.

If you click on the Delete button in a file, you are not actually deleting it from your computer. It only moves to the Trash, which continues to occupy valuable disk space.

Although you probably already know how to empty the trash, you often forget to do such a simple job. When you run out of space, follow the steps to manually empty the recycle bin and permanently delete all its contents.

Although there are several ways to configure the Trash in Windows 10 (and earlier versions), it is not necessary to empty the Trash in time.

To automatically empty the recycle bin in Windows

There are many ways to automatically clean your recycle bin, such as using a standalone third-party program, using the built-in disk cleaning utility, etc. However, we will choose a simple and efficient method that uses both the Task Scheduler and the Command Prompt.

Using the task scheduler

  1. First look for the “Task Scheduler” in the Start menu and open it. You can also use the Run taskchd.msc command to open the task scheduler.
  2. After opening the Task Scheduler, click on the Create Basic Task option that appears under the Action category in the right pane.
  3. The above action opens the Task Creation Wizard. Enter the name and description of your choice here, then click on the Next button to continue.
  4. In this window, you can set the interval at which the trigger is triggered. Select the “Weekly” radio button and click on the “Next” button.
  5. Now select the start time, the day of the recurring week, then click on the “Next” button. As you can see, I have chosen my recurring day as “Sunday”, which simply means that the task will be performed every Sunday at 2:53 pm.
  6. Go to the Actions tab and click on New.
  7. In the Programs/script field, type cmd.exe.
  8. Add the following arguments and click OK.

Conclusion

This is a practical tip for emptying the bin and making space on a hard disk. Many people will throw tons of things in the garbage, but will never empty them. You can easily fix this by setting up an automatic task to do it for you.
