Playing compatible video or audio files on your system requires the installation of appropriate codecs. These codecs, if properly installed, run on the end user’s computer and allow them to play multimedia files without interruption.
There are hundreds of audio and video codecs available and used today, most of them for free, while some costs are incurred. Most of the media players we install will also install the necessary codecs; and yet, there will be this strange file that may require a specific codec to play. How to identify the codec and know where to download it?
I came across a freeware that can help you. CodecInstaller is a useful codec installer that not only detects the audio and video codecs installed on your system, but also scans the files to understand which codecs are needed to make the media files readable.
CodecInstaller detects the audio and video codecs installed on your system, analyzes the files to understand which codecs they need and suggests you install them(2).
The program has the ability to scan the target computer and target audio/video file to inform the user of the codec required for effective clip playback. It scans files in different formats (AVI, MPEG, WMV, WMA, OGG, MP3, MP4, etc.) and displays additional information such as width/height and ratio, length, video codec, size, bit rate too.
Using CodecInstaller

- To see which audio and video decoders you have on your system, simply select’Codecs installed’.
- Click the option to get a list of installed codecs and filters. Filter Mappings Editor, a tool is one of the extended functions of the CodecInstaller. You can change the priority and type of media that a filter processes.
- If you don’t like the program and want to uninstall it, simply open the Add/Remove Programs utility, which you can access from the Control Panel. Then search for the’CodecInstaller’ entry and click on the’Modify/Remove’ option. If you confirm the action with’Yes’, the application will be completely deleted from your system.
CodecInstaller is available in multiple languages and in two packages,
- CodecInstaller 2.10.4 – Network Installation (500 KB large file). This package contains only the basic CodecInstaller module and downloads only the optional components selected by the user.
- CodecInstaller 2.10.4 – full package (3.06 MB large file) – Contains all optional components and comes with a toolbar.
