If you see a red X on the speaker icon in the notification area and move your mouse over the icon, you see a message The audio service does not work on your Windows 10/8/7 PC, so here are some things you need to look at.

1] Check Windows Services status

Start services.msc to open Windows Services Manager. Scroll down to Windows Audio Service and double-click to open its properties. This service manages audio for Windows programs. If this service is stopped, the audio devices and effects will not function properly. If this service is disabled, not all services that explicitly depend on it are started

Set the start type to Automatic and click the Start button Start. If it has already started, stop it and restart it.

You must ensure that its dependency services have started and are of the Auto Start type:

  1. Remote procedure call
  2. Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

If the Multimedia Class Scheduler Service is present on your system, it must also be started and set to Automatic.

Multimedia Class Scheduler Service (MMCSS) is a Windows service that allows multimedia applications to get priority access to the CPU (for example, multimedia applications) and priority access to the disk to ensure that the process is not affected by data loss.

2] Run Audio Troubleshooting

(Windows 10) contains Playing Audio Troubleshooter, which you can easily access via the Control Panel, Search Taskbar or Troubleshooting tab of our free FixWin 10 software. You can also access it from the Windows 10 Troubleshooting page.

Run it and see if it can solve your problem.

3] Troubleshooting in Clean Boot State

A Clean Boot is used to diagnose problems with your system and solve them later. During a clean boot, we boot the system with a minimum number of drivers and boot programs, which allows the cause to be isolated using disruptive software.

Once you have started in the clean start state, activate one process after another and see which process causes the problem. That way, you can find the culprit.

See this message if Windows was unable to start the Windows audio service on the local computer and this if the audio service is not running, but you still have sound!
