Reallocated is not really such a big problem. It simply means that your disk has found a broken or damaged sector and replaced it with a spare sector, and so the hard disk now shows that it is 100% OK.
I would make a backup, monitor the smart values and get rid of the disk as soon as you see the value of the pending sectors rising.
The Count S.M.A.R.T. parameter of the reallocated sectors displays the number of newly allocated sectors (512 bytes). If the disc finds a reading, writing and checking error, it marks this sector as “reassigned” and transfers the data to a special reserved area (reserve area). This process is also called remapping and the “reassigned” sectors are called remaps. Therefore, on a modern hard disk, you will not see “bad blocks” when testing the interface – all bad blocks are hidden in reassigned sectors.
However, the more sectors that are reallocated, the more a sudden decrease (up to 10% and more) can be noticed in the read/write speed of the disk.
Important SMART attributes:
– Number of sectors reassigned = bad sectors in the past; this could have caused problems in the past, but is not necessary; readers replace weak sectors as a precaution, without ever causing problems.
– Current pending sector = The most dangerous intelligent attribute; this should ALWAYS be ZERO or you have serious problems! It may be either a low electrical charge with insufficient ECC correction capacity
-OR- it may be physical damage. Writing to this sector will solve the problem; if it is physical damage, it will be restarted by a reserve sector, and the gross value of the number of reassignments will increase.
– UDMA CRC Error Count; if this number is greater than 1000 and increases, you have serious wiring problems; below 100, no alarms should be triggered. Technically, this means that the recipient has received a corrupted version of the data sent by the sender; the corruption has been detected by CRC, which means that the data is NOT accepted and the request is returned. Unless you see very high values or they increase steadily, it’s usually not a big problem.
Reallocated Sector Count Warning and Drive Corruption
A campaign with a large number of defective sectors or newly assigned sector numbers can also lead to corruption. A bad sector can damage file system information or parts of data containing file system information. Such disks generally rotate in RAW and become inaccessible. However, the data on these disks can be recovered using a data recovery tool that supports the recovery of damaged disks.
Fixing Reallocated Sectors
The only “fix” for a newly assigned sector is the purchase of a new hard disk. Once a sector has been reassigned, the disk will no longer use it and will continue to operate without storing data on that part of the disk. There is no software or hardware fixation to reduce the number of reallocated sectors.
I’ve seen horrible YouTube videos of people opening hard drives to “repair” reassigned sectors. Please, whatever you do, DO NOT open your hard drive. All that will probably happen is that you will end up with a paperweight in hard disk format. Sectors are microscopically small and there are a million ways for them to become bad, opening a hard drive outside a clean room without any professional experience in data recovery will only create more problems. It is almost guaranteed that you will bring back the dust or break it in any way.
Only after you have backed up your data and purchased a new drive can you open it and turn the discs into sweetened drink coasters.
