Restore Acrobat

  1. Open Run by pressing Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.CPL in “Run” and press Return.
  3. Select the Adobe Acrobat software.
  4. Click Edit to open the window shown in the figure below.
  5. Select the Correct program installation errors option.
  6. Click the Next button.
  7. When the installation process is complete, click Finish.

Updating the Acrobat software

  1. Right-click on the Start menu and select Run.
  2. Type appwiz.CPL in the text box and click OK.
  3. Select Adobe Acrobat and click Uninstall.
  4. Click Yes to confirm.
  5. Restart Windows after uninstalling Adobe Acrobat.
  6. Then download Adobe Acrobat from the official website.

Disabling protected mode on startup

  1. In Acrobat, click Edit -> Preferences to open a window.
  2. Click Security (Advanced) on the left side of the window to open the options shown below.
  3. Uncheck Enable protected mode at startup.
  4. Clear the Enable enhanced security check box.
  5. Close the Preferences and Adobe Acrobat window.
  6. Then open Adobe and see if this resolves the DDE server error.

Editing the registry

  1. First, press the Windows + X key combination.
  2. Select Run to open Accessories.
  3. Type Regedit in the text box and press Enter to open the registry editor.
  4. Enter this registry path in the address bar:
    ComputerHKEY_CLASSES_ROOTacrobatshellopenddeexecapplication.
  5. Select the application key on the left side of the registry editor window.
  6. Double-click Default to open the Edit String window that appears directly below it.
  7. Then delete the current AcroviewA18 or AcroviewA19 text in the Value data field.
  8. Enter AcroviewR18 in the Value data field if the original value was AcroviewA18.
  9. Then click the OK button.
  10. Restart Windows after making changes to the registry.
