Microsoft Word, probably the best word processor available for the Windows operating system, is extremely feature-rich. One of the many, many features of Word is the ability for users to have Word display a number of different, usually invisible, markers and icons that are used to format the text in a document. One of the formatting symbols used by Word is a paragraph symbol (which essentially looks like a “P” type). Each time a new paragraph is created in a Word document, this paragraph symbol is added where the paragraph begins. This symbol is hidden by default, but users can view any instance of this symbol that exists in a Word document.

This feature is useful when you want to see if a paragraph exists on a blank page in a document, or when you need to clean up your document because simply selecting the P symbol that corresponds to a paragraph and deleting it removes the entire paragraph, but many users cannot get rid of paragraph symbols once they have displayed them in Word. While paragraph symbols can be a great help in some cases, under normal circumstances they only make a document harder to read because they make the text look unnecessarily busy.

Fortunately, it is fairly easy to get rid of paragraph symbols after Word has displayed them. Here are the two methods you can use to get rid of paragraph symbols after they are displayed in Word.

Use the Hide/Show Paragraph Marks Toolbar Button

• Click on the “File” button at the top left of the window. A window opens on the left side of Word.
• Click on “Options” at the bottom of the “File” window. A pop-up options window for the words will open.
• Click the “View” button in the upper left corner of the Word options window.
• Click the box next to “Paragraph marks” to remove the checkmark from the box.
• Click “OK” to save your changes.

To Remove Paragraph Symbol in Word in the Options Settings

This method allows you to access the Word Options dialog box and then configure Microsoft Word to turn the paragraph symbol on and off. Please follow these steps:

• In Microsoft Word, click on “File”.
• Now select “Options” to open the Word Options dialog box.
• In the Word options dialog box, click “View”.
• Under Display Options, locate the section “Always display these formatting marks on the screen”.
• In the list, you will see a check box labeled “Paragraph marks”. Check the box if you want to enable paragraph marks in your Word document.
• You can also use the same method to disable all other formatting marks, such as hidden text, tab characters, object anchors and spaces.
• Click the OK button below to save your changes.
