How to Screenshot Apps that Block Screenshots on Windows 10

The screenshots are mostly harmless, but there are always exceptions. Some applications, especially those reading DRM-protected content, tend to disable taking screenshots. Netflix is an obvious example, although there are ways around this problem. If you have an application that blocks screenshots and you are using a Windows 10 system, it is easier to take that screenshot than you think.

Use Snipping Tool to Capture Screenshots

Take a snapshot to copy words or images from all or part of your PC screen. Use the cut tool to make changes or notes, then save and share them.

Capture one of the following types of snippets :

• Freeform snippets Draw a freeform around an object.
• Rectangular snippet Drag the cursor around an object to form a rectangle.
• Window Capture Select a window, such as a dialog box, that you want to capture.
• Full screen Capture the entire screen.

When you capture a section, it is automatically copied to the Trim Tool window, where you can make, save, and release changes.

Use Third Party Screenshot Tool

Although Windows has several screen capture methods, third-party options offer much more control and customization. Simply install one of the best screen capture tools and change its keyboard shortcuts as you wish.

All you need is a super simple tool to run the application in a sandbox. The only catch is that this only applies to desktop applications and not UWP applications, because the application of choice we recommend for sandboxing is sandboxing and no UWP application can run it.

Download Sandboxie and install it. After installation, run the application and click the Browse button. Select the EXE of the application you want to run in sandboxing mode and click the screenshot. If you have a shortcut to the application on your desktop (or elsewhere), you can select it instead.

When the application is running, you will see a yellow frame around it. This indicates that the application is running in sandbox mode. Configure the application for the screenshot, then click outside the application. This will make the application inactive. No keyboard or mouse input will be recognized by the application because it is both inactive/background and running in a sandbox.

You can now use the screen capture tool of your choice to take a screenshot. It is better to take a screenshot in full screen rather than one that targets the window itself or an area of the screen.

This works with Netflix running in a browser. Normally Netflix is able to disable screenshots even when running in a browser. For all other applications, this should work as well. You may be able to use the same trick to record a screencast.
